Amelia
Beth and her team are still in the process of setting up computers and monitors when Monica and I join them in what would be the living area of the room. It's a mirror image of the penthouse suite I was just in only all the furniture has been pushed against the wall.
"Welcome to the War Room," Beth says without looking over her shoulder.
"Is she kidding?" I whisper to Monica.
"Probably not. If I've learned anything about Beth and her work, it's that she takes it seriously. When it comes to Johnathan, every move she makes is calculated. Every decision carefully weighed before action is taken. To her, this is war. It's them versus Johnathan."
Monica spreads her arms wide, motioning around the room. There are at least fifteen people all working feverishly on one thing or another.
When the main door opens behind us, I jump slightly and search for a place to hide.
"It's only Garcia," Monica says soothingly, placing her hand on my forearm.
"Monica. Amelia." He nods at us as he passes by, heading directly for Beth and the small team that's surrounding her. My feet move on their own accord, following him. "What do we have? Anything?"
"Nothing yet but we will. Mendez is in the bedroom if you want to question him," Beth explains. "He's not saying much, but you might have better luck than I did. He'll recognize you. Maybe that'll shake him a little, get him to talk."
"I can try but—" Garcia begins before the chiming of his phone interrupts him. Before he can even remove his phone from his pocket, the phone in Beth's hand chimes as well.
They share a knowing look, one that immediately causes me to worry. As they each stare at their phones, the pressure in my chest builds, and when they look up at me in unison, my heart threatens to explode.
It has to be Johnathan.
He has to know where I am.
Monica was right. He was the one receiving the messages from Beth.
"What's our next move?" Garcia asks.
"We can't give him Mendez, but we need to trap him somehow. Ideas?"
Garcia silently ponders his options before replying. "I don't think we have another option. We need Mendez. We need another meeting. I'll find a way to disarm Lang before anything can happen, but just in case, put him in Kevlar."
"I thought you said he was aiming to kill." Beth raises her eyebrow at Garcia, challenging his idea, but when he smiles at her, I watch her skepticism melt away.
"Be ready to move in. No more than five minutes after we arrive. He spotted our decoy earlier, so keep everyone out of sight this time."
"We need to get her out of here. He's too close for comfort," Beth notes before quickly typing out a reply on her phone.
"She's safest here. We may be close to him, but it's the last place he'd ever look. And I have to get back. I've been summoned, which means he still trusts me." Leaning in, Garcia places a gentle kiss on Beth's cheek before turning to face me.
